Karlsruhe

2019 – 2023

Discontinued

Goodbye

Accento was an amazing combination of high-caliber conference and well-founded, hands-on trainings for experienced Java/web developers. Alas, it was quite young when COVID hit and never quite recovered and so, with a heavy heart, we decided to discontinue it.

No new events are planned at the moment and that is unlikely to change any time soon. We're not saying "never", though.

Looking Back

We believe that Accento in Karlsruhe was unique.

In 2019 we had a cool location, the best attendees and partners, a great atmosphere, and an international and (if we may say so ourselves) impressive speaker line-up. We were extremely thrilled by the outcome, got lots of positive feedback and in the subsequent years, we wanted to build on that and turn Accento into a gem in the German and international Java community.

Then COVID-19 happened.

We organized two online conferences in 2020 and 2021 and while we're happy with what we hosted, we begrudgingly realized that they didn't stand out. There were simply too many online conferences out there doing really cool things that we were too small to compete with. And since it was never our goal to organize Just Another Conference, we came to the conclusion that we want to focus on in-person events in the future. Unfortunately, winter 2021/2022 didn't really inspire confidence that it would be responsible and fun to meet people face to face in the coming fall and so we decided to pause Accento in 2022.

The next year, we were back in person! Accento 2023 was a bit larger than 2019 and speakers, attendees, and sponsors alike told us how much the enjoyed it. Overall, it was a great event!

Alas, to us it felt a bit too little, too late. By now we had invested four years into Accento and never got it to the point were it grew organically. It required a lot of hustle and work from not just us (Uta and Nicolai) but a whole team at Disy and we felt that it didn't quite turn the corner where the outcome matched the energy we invested. In the end, the decision to discontinue Accento was both heartaching and obvious.

Still, even while I'm writing these lines, I'm wondering whether there isn't some way to keep running the show (I'll leave it to you to guess who I am). So, honestly, there's probably gonna be something some day. 😁 Not for now, though. Now, we're taking a break.

We had an amazing time with you! So long, and thanks for all the fish.
